This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"We want to be in the drum line too!"
This is the statement that has propelled me into my latest pursuit...making high school social life obtainable for my Speech and Language students with Autism and moderate to profound disabilities. All of my 25 speech and language students at MLK High School want to be accepted by peers. However, this can be quite difficult because of their special needs and challenges. Not only do they have trouble communicating, but they just don't know how to do what "the other kids" do.
My students are fortunate enough to be included in the general education band class. They love it! They love it so much that they "move to the beat" and often sing to the music. Even though they love it, they are bored with their passive role. They want to be active and "in the drum line too".
The only problem is that none of my students own an instrument. That is why I am requesting snare drum percussion instruments.
These instruments will allow my students with disabilities to participate in band to the best of their abilities. No longer will they have to sit idly by and watch. They will be able to participate, be a part of the band, and to be included in a social activity with typically developing peers. Furthermore, their abilities, not their disabilities, will be showcased allowing for greater peer acceptance.
For those of you who remember high school and college band with fond memories, why not afford my students the same memories of fun, team work, and peer acceptance? They will be forever grateful.
