Communications Camp -- Breaking Down Barriers!

My students need assistance in paying for a 3 day field trip (to promote diversity and acceptance) called 'Communications Camp.'

My Students

In a large high school in metro Detroit, many students tend to get 'lost in the crowd.' They may feel like a number. Although surrounded by over 1,400 other students, they may feel like they don't truly know anyone. They may feel like they don't fit in, or that no-one really cares about them as a person.

M.

High School seems like a normal suburban school on the surface. Look closely, however, and you will find students from many backgrounds -- ethnically, economically, religiously, etc.

As is the case in many larger high schools, many of our students gravitate toward various groups or 'cliques.' While these school and social groups can provide some sense of belonging to students, they also tend to establish invisible barriers between the cliques. We have all kinds of wonderful students here at M. High School, but they sometimes need help understanding and respecting each other.

My Project

Approximately 60 students and 13 faculty (male and female) members will be heading to Camp Copneconic Fenton for a three day camp experience to the communication model. Small groups consist of 12 student and 2 faculty trainers. Students learn to effectively communicate ideas and feelings through a step by step process which requires them to accept personal responsibility for themselves and others. They learn how to examine their own communication skills, their progression with these skills, and the improvement of the learning situation and environment.

The goal of communication training is to promote tolerance, appreciation, and understanding among students and staff.

Members of the group learn to plan and participate in a series of small group discussions that deal with topics agreed upon by the participants. Students and staff learn such group skills and concerns as: topic selection, goal setting, consensus, leadership, two-way communication, and evaluation.

Communications Camp has proven to be an effective tool for not only improving student’s communications skills, but for helping students from various social backgrounds to understand and respect each other. As we strive to create smaller learning communities for our students, Communications Camp attempts to help the leaders of our many in school communities.
