Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are creative and engaging individuals who bring smiles to the faces of everyone they meet! They are seeking tools to help the become effective communicators in order to navigate the world around them.
I am a speech language pathologist in a large, high need, urban district.
I provide direct speech and language therapy, classroom support, and consultative services to 31 students who receive services under the exceptionality of Autism or Developmental Delay. All of my students are placed in self-contained classrooms in our district. Our resources are limited but our needs are great. Many of my students are not traditional communicators who rely solely on the spoken word. Instead, my students benefit from visual scaffolding to improve vocabulary and develop language skills.
My Project
My vision is to create communication books and boards in order to help my students produce meaningful messages to all communication partners. For some students, this means using the color ink, Velcro, and plastic dividers to make a basic communication book for them to utilize at school. For other students, these tools will be utilized to create dynamic, visual supports to help students access all activities during group speech and language activities. For example, I often use picture books to target various language skills. I use the plastic dividers with velcro to house visual tools for the books such as sequencing cards, character pictures, and question cards. I am also asking for dot markers to help students indicate correct answers on worksheets and other visual supports.
Your support will help to improve the lives of my amazing students.
They will benefit from the visual tools that this project will allow me to make for them. My students have so much to say - they just need help to express themselves!
