My students need tools for facilitating language, such as 10 small whiteboards and markers, oral language practice materials, sequencing pictures, and a story board.
Most 4th and 5th grade students love to talk and have conversations, so much it drives their teachers crazy! Not true for students with autism; communication skills are just another important skill they must master in order to be successful in school and in life!
I teach ten 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students who have a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder.
My classroom is self-contained within a public elementary school. Because we are in this setting, my students have many opportunities for social development with typical developing peers. Some of my students are included in regular education for academics and all of my students mainstream for social skills. My students have a broad range of abilities and strengths, but all need communication practice on an implicit and individualized level.
My students use white boards for language practice daily. We facilitate conversations with language prompts and sentence starters written on the small white boards. My students are able to read the scripts on the boards in order to more naturally engage in conversations. Currently we are using cut pieces of shower board which have worn out over the years. We would use our new white boards across all our daily activities. Similarly, we would use the phonics phones to listen to ourselves while talking and reading, the oral language kit to facilitate language games, and the story board and sequencing cards to practice story telling.
My students with Autism Spectrum Disorder have a unique potential to learn many academics and skills.
But no matter how much math they learn or how well they read, they will only be as successful as they are able to independently engage in conversations. All of my students lack communication skills, but have the chance to improve and grow in their language abilities, given the right tools and consistent practice. I can give them the practice. I need your help to get the right tools!
