Communication Station: Enabling Students to Communicate Through Personalized Adapted Materials

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My kiddos are amazing. They are curious, inquisitive learners who want to not only improve how they communicate in the speech therapy room, but also in their classrooms, on the playground, at home, and everywhere else they go in the world. The majority of my students are from culturally diverse backgrounds and are from low-income households.
Many of my students have special needs that impact their ability to effectively communicate with the world around them.
Communication does not just impact them academically. Their inability to effectively communicate impacts them socially and emotionally as well.
My students would greatly benefit from having personalized adapted materials that they can use in the speech room, in the classroom, in the hallway, on the playground, at home, and out in the community to help them effectively communicate their basic wants and needs, as well as their social and emotional wants and needs.
My Project
Being able to communicate is one of the most important rights in the world. As the only Speech therapist in a school for students who present with great communication needs, I am looking to gain new materials such as a Cricut, a colored printer, laminating sheets, Velcro, and binders that will help me create and adapt personalized materials such as communication boards, Picture Exchange Communication system (PECS) boards, and toys and books that can be adapted to fit each student's personal communication needs. The majority of my students have communication exceptionalities that make it difficult for them to communicate in ways that most of the world can understand.
Using personalized materials, such as communication boards and PECS boards, not only helps my students to communicate their basic wants and needs, but also helps them to participate socially in their environment and reduce frustration towards communicating, as well.
Additionally, I am looking for to add sensory items to my class like the monkey noodle,s braille cubes, and braille dots to make therapy more adaptive for my visually impaired students. Everyone deserves a chance to communicate in a way that best fits them whether it be words, pictures, gestures, or signs. These materials will help my students communicate in ways that fit them best.
