This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are elementary-aged children who struggle with speech and language. While communication and connection are always difficult for my students, COVID-19 has delivered an extra blow. Face masks cover vital cues for children learning to make speech sounds, and distance learning, school absences, unpredictable schedules, and the other challenges that COVID has brought impacts those who need extra help the most.

My students are hard workers who have to overcome disabilities that make it difficult to communicate and connect with others.

At a time when the world is especially keyed into the importance of face-to-face connection, I want my students--who already struggle with those vital connections--to have everything they need to succeed.

My Project

Play is the best method to build communication skills. Kids' work is play, and research has shown that learning through play leads to better retention and faster growth. During COVID-19, so many children have fallen behind in their speech and communication. I need materials to help them catch up and learn the language skills needed to help them succeed and connect to others.

The materials in the Communication Means Connection project are specially picked to allow kids to play while learning speech and language skills.

They include materials for pretend play, skills practice, incentives, and game play.
