My class focus is language development through the standards. I teach my students how to communicate effectively. A typical day is learning basic communication skills and increasing student vocabulary. Our quote is #NoExcuses from Derrick Coleman. No matter what is in front of you...never give up!
My students are Deaf/Hard of Hearing.
Some of my students have secondary disabilities such as autism and mild intellectual disability. Due to their hearing loss, my students have severe language/communication deficits, as well as vocabulary deficits. My class total communication setting. Some of my students are signers, others use pictures, and some are more dependent on reading lips.
The ipad will serve several purposes: 1. It will allow immediate access to help with vocabulary. Being able to search for simple everyday objects to show pictures so that my students have an understanding of the vocabulary is essential. 2. Communication device. I have students with autism that are working on expressing wants/needs and other basic communication needs. Using apps designed for communication development will help create boards that my students can use to begin to express simple needs. 3. Language development. I have students who cannot identify simple objects for various reasons related to their disability. With the ipad I will be able to use the technology to help foster a language enriched atmosphere and prepare my students for the technology of today. 4. Educational tool. There are many educational apps to help my students be successful. I plan to create folders for each student with apps specific to their IEP goals so that each student will be successful and progress
Funding this project will enrich my students' lives by giving them meaningful communication, and allowing them the opportunity to build language crucial for communication in their daily interactions.
It will help create an environment for my students to learn how to interact in school as well as in the work place.
