I teach fifth grade at a suburban school in Oklahoma. My students come from various cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. They are a diverse and unique bunch. Each day, we strive to do the very best we can. We are a Title I school, and a large percentage of our students qualify for free and reduced-price lunch.
Our school is a learning community.
We try to meet the needs of every student and challenge them to set and reach goals each and every day.
My Project
We have a very culturally diverse student body. Many students who come to my classroom are not native English speakers. Several of them struggle with English and I do not speak any Spanish. Due to this, I am requesting a course in Spanish through the Rosetta Stone software program. This course will help me improve my Spanish skills and will be an asset to my classroom communication.
Communication is key in the classroom.
Learning even basic Spanish will help me communicate with my students and make them feel more comfortable in the classroom. When students are more comfortable they are more likely to participate and practice using their English skills. Not only will it improve comfort levels within the classroom, but it will further improve classroom and school culture as well as embrace our school's diversity.
