Our school is an amazing place with students from all over the world: India, South Korea, China, Japan, Kenya, Senegal, Ghana, Egypt, Russia, El Salvador, and Mexico. This diversity makes our school a vibrant place to learn. As the ESL teacher, my students are English language learners with a wide variety of native languages from Telugu to Swahili to Spanish. They have varied experiences and enriching perspectives, along with an intense desire to learn and grow.
Although our school is a high-performing school, there is a noticeable achievement gap.
Many of my ESL students are performing well below their monolingual peers, mainly due to their lack of exposure to the English language. Reading is a complex process for any student and can be especially strenuous for English language learners who struggle frequently with vocabulary.
My Project
My English learners do their best to learn content in a new language, but they seem to struggle with expression (speaking and writing). Instead of doing things the way I have ALWAYS done them, I am striving to try something new. Why not get students to SPEAK English by responding to digital prompts and recording their voices? That is why I am asking for super-cool, retro phone receivers to use as headphones/microphones for recording student voices. This way I can listen to their language over and over again to pinpoint areas of weakness, and we can interact with students all over the world using platforms like FLIPGRID.
Why not motivate students to WRITE using the latest technology, such as Boogie Boards?
Not only do we save paper, but students will be thrilled to pick up a stylus and begin expressing their thoughts. Novelty-combined with solid, motivating practice improves results.
