"Diversity is being invited to the party; inclusion is being asked to do dance". Verna Myers My students are loving and energetic individuals who enjoy learning and participating in activities just like their "non-disabled" peers do, they just require a little assistance. Typically, they learn best by using pictures, symbols, and other hands-on materials. They are intellectually, developmentally, and/or medically challenged. They require materials that are made for their individual unique needs. Materials that are fun and engaging for their ability level. Materials that will help them to be asked to dance.
My students are expected to make gains with the curriculum, however they require materials that are adapted to meet their needs. Many times those materials have to be hand-crafted by teachers and paraprofessionals, and the materials have to be durable enough to withstand the constant manipulation of the student.
The materials will make a difference because the items that will be preserved with the lamination, will be used for such as communication boards, visual schedules, picture symbols as well as simple picture cards throughout the instructional day to enhance the students' learning and will accommodate their unique needs.
These materials will improve the students' functional communication skills in order to increase their ability to express their wants, thoughts and feelings more effectively.
