Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a speech-language pathologist working in a large multi-ethnic, urban/suburban school district serving nearly 29,000 students. The students are from varied backgrounds and cultures and mostly from low income families (80% receive free or reduced lunch). My school is home to 12 special education classes also know as “social communication” classes. The students in these classes present with Autism, cognitive impairment or other special needs and receive therapeutic services as part of their program including occupation therapy, physical therapy, vision and hearing therapy and speech-language therapy.
The wonderful students on my speech-language caseload present with moderately to severely delayed expressive and receptive language skills.
They are either non-verbal or exhibit very limited expressive language which hinders their ability to communicate effectively. Some of these students require low-tech alternative communication devices to meet their basic wants and needs. Other students benefit from visual aids to learn language including vocabulary, reading comprehension and grammar. My students need meaningful color pictures to enhance learning and to communicate effectively.
My Project
My speech-language students have autism, cognitive impairment or other special needs. They have a strong desire to communicate but this ability is hindered due to their delayed verbal skills.
The pictures or symbols will give my students a voice.
A widely used software program which consists of thousands of symbols/pictures depicting spoken words requires a color printer for the most accurate representation. A child’s unlimited access to engaging pictures for communication and learning reduces many barriers they typically face during a school day. A color printer would give them the access they deserve and allows my speech-language students to make meaningful progress with meaningful materials.
The pictures will be compiled into a communication book or board for the purpose of requesting desired food items, favorite toys and other basic needs. Most importantly, it allows them to communicate effectively with peers and adults throughout their school day.
