Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a speech language pathologist and my current students range from preschool to 5th grade. My students are constantly working hard towards improving their speech, language, and communication. Some students are working on articulating specific sounds, while others are working on their expressive language in the classroom and school environment.
A number of them are nonverbal or have difficulties with expressive language, and may need other means of communication.
One way is using pictures as a means to express their needs. I would love for my students with communication difficulties to be able to tell us and their families what they need and be able to participate in the classroom, whether it be verbally or through pictures and other multimodal means.
My Project
Every child has a voice and the right to be able to communicate their voices at school. Sometimes that voice is not only verbal, but also visual through pictures. Having a colored printer with the accompanying ink allows me to create these picture cards for them. Velcro will allow the students to use the cards in a communication book in a functional way and adhere the pictures to a binder to teach them core vocabulary words.
Being able to provide my students with communication cards will let me help them find their voices in whatever form that may be.
They will be able to use these cards in the classroom to answer the teacher’s questions, participate in class discussions, and interact with their peers and others.
