My Students

I have the unique privilege of teaching 2 elective classes--Spanish and Dance, in a low-income high school.

My students often have to face barriers that make learning readiness difficult.

They need help getting to a place where they can actually relax and learn. They need adults that are trained to recognize this and help them get to a place where they are ready to learn when they come to school.

My Project

I had the honor of hearing Dr. Donna Beegle speak as a keynote speaker at a Social Justice for Education Conference I attended 5 years ago. I learned so much in her hour speech and bought her book to learn more. I have applied the knowledge to how I run my classroom--For example, because of her words, homework in my class has decreased, as I know have an understanding of the choices many of my students face when they go home from school. I have students experiencing homelessness in each of my classes, and sometimes on my Dance Team, as well.

I want to spend more time learning about the barriers my students face--how to recognize them, how help students face them, and how to set up my classroom environment and curriculum to support their needs.
