My students need two Dell laptops and two microphone kits to use for the creation of their monthly classroom podcast which is based on their magazine project.

My students walk into our classroom, every day, full of life, ready to learn, and excited for what is in store for them that day. They are a group of children who work hard at being an inspiration to themselves and to others. They enjoy incorporating what they have learned into real life experiences.
My students come from very low socio-economic backgrounds.
If someone were to look around the neighborhood where my students live, he/she would see extreme poverty that has therefore created drug problems, violence, and limited education. My students are at least two, three, and even four years behind grade level. From birth, the odds have been stacked against my students. My students all live in run down housing developments known as the projects.
Despite their home backgrounds, my students come to school prepared to learn, even with their limited abilities. They want to do well. Their parents and guardians want them to succeed in school as well. I am blessed to have parents this year who regularly come to my classroom in support of their children. My school is a Title I school. All my students receive free breakfast and lunch.
Recently, I completed a fellowship in the Communications Department at a prestigious university from my state. The primary focus of the fellowship was how to come up with ways in which communication skills that are taught at the university level can also be integrated into the classroom. I initially came up with the students completing a monthly magazine the focuses on positive events that occur within the school as well as the within the community that surrounds their school. Unfortunately, there are children who struggle with reading because of a learning disability or because they are visually impaired. Therefore, in addition to creating the monthly magazine, I decided that my students can bring the magazine to life through the creation and use of a podcast.
Podcasts are a perfect way to integrate writing, oral communication, and technology together to connect to their community and even the world.
The creation and use of a podcast allows my students to showcase their learning at a higher platform than just their neighborhood. My students need the two laptops and microphone kits to spearhead their classroom podcast that will be based on what they have created in their monthly magazine. The podcast will serve as an extension of what is written in the magazine.
Creating and using a podcast will not only help my students improve their speaking skills. It will also allow my students to learn and experience how to write, edit, produce, and develop their own projects. This opportunity will provide them with the skills that students who are currently in college are using. It is my goal that because of this project, my students may want to have careers that utilize different aspects of communication.
