This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have both regular and honors 9th grade English students. These students have big personalities and love being able to do and try new things. I noticed this year as we did journals that these students are also very interested in the way the world is behaving and working.

They are aware of what is going on in the world and are wondering what they can do.

Where do they fit in the world as it is right now? I notice these topics reoccurring time and time again in their writing. They are young adults navigating a very strange and tumultuous time. I think we often forget that students are seeing what is going on and want a chance to respond.

I have 220 students. I teach the majority of the 9th-grade students in the school I work at. Our school tends to have a very diverse population of students. I am happy that within my classroom my students represent different genders, LGBTQ+ members, religions, races, and cultures. I love this diverse group of students that I get to work with.

My Project

I will be using a large assortment of novels to assign to students to read both in school and at home if necessary. I want students to practice conversing with the text and connecting to the text on a deeper level. I have included sticky notes and highlighters so that students can annotate and connect to the text. I also chose books with varying lengths, cultures, genres in order to appeal to many types of students and foster a love of reading.

It is important that students can dive deeper into the text.

This is a way to allow them to learn while reading. I also wanted enough books that if necessary, students could take these books home (in case we have periods of online learning).
