This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have six students in a K-2 autism classroom. Most of my students have limited verbal skills and do not communicate much on their own. They have varying levels of academic skills and the majority are working on learning basic skills, as well as communication and social skills.
We have a structured routine throughout the day with many hands-on and independent activities.
We have a morning routine that students look forward to every day; independent work time where students practice working by themselves on skills they have mastered; group time to work on academic skills and writing; story time to work on comprehension, math, science and art time where we create creative and colorful projects using construction paper and following picture directions. They have made so much progress so far this year with academic, social and communication skills.
My Project
I recently bought an ice cream counter for my students to use during our social skills time. It comes with a menu that has visual options to choose which cone, ice cream and toppings you want. My students love it and will constantly play the role of the ice cream server or customer. They work on communication skills, life skills and social skills while participating in this activity.
My students need more opportunities to use pretend play items in the classroom to work on communication and social skills.
The items in this project are other items very similar to the ice cream counter. They all come with a visual menu to choose from and the materials are realistic and durable. Students will use these items to work on building social skills by playing and interacting with each other with a structured activity. They will also work on using language and communication skills to communicate with each other what they want to order.
