The students in my classroom are Kindergarten through 4th grade, come from across the district, and all reside within the district. The school is a Title I school. It is also a school of choice with approximately 60% of the students coming from outside the district boundaries. There is a diverse ethnic make up and a range of socio-economic levels. My students have one or more disabilities and have a variety of learning needs. All of the students have significant communication needs and many of them are non-verbal or have very limited verbal skills.
My students all have an amazing zest for learning in spite of the difficulties they experience every day.
They are always striving and working hard to learn even the simplest tasks that many people would take for granted like walking, talking, or holding a crayon to scribble.
My Project
I am seeking an iPad Air (64gb with WiFi capabilities) to assist my students in finding ways for them to communicate in the classroom and around campus. All of my students have significant communication delays and many are completely non-verbal. This piece of equipment can be loaded with communication apps that will allow the students to verbalize their wants, needs, and thoughts. I am also asking for a rugged case that is waterproof and a carry strap for portability from place to place. Due to some of my students limitations carrying a heavier piece of technology would be more difficult. Some students are prone to dropping things or have issues with drooling so this type of case and strap will better protect the iPad.
My students all have a lot to say - but many can't use words.
Having classroom-based communication options like an iPad with communication apps will let them learn to communicate more effectively and be heard by all the people they encounter in their day.
