My Students

My students range from tiny 3 year olds encountering their first school experience to high schoolers bigger than me who are classroom pros! My students are all special education students in various classrooms in Chicago Public schools. Some are in fully inclusive general education classrooms and some are in blended special education/general education rooms. As a speech language pathologist, my students are a diverse group of learners who struggle with some aspect of speech, language, and communication skills. My student caseload is primarily early childhood and elementary students.

My students have very inquisitive, active, and curious minds and have so much to say; however, they have various communication impairments which make it difficult for them to understand and use speech, words, and language to communicate.

Some of my students are able to speak in full sentences, some single words, and some are considered "nonverbal" and do not use speech as their primary modality of communication. All are remarkable and end up teaching ME something new, making me laugh, making me cry, or surprising me with their skills every day.

My Project

My students learn soooo much through art projects in their speech sessions! We talk through our projects. My students learn to describe objects and artwork, sequence steps, follow multi-step instructions, request materials, make appropriate social comments to their peers, ask questions! These projects give my students an opportunity to showcase their creativity and express themselves without necessarily using words, which for students with communication disorders using words can be very hard for them! Not to mention, they are having FUN and I am disguising their "work" muhahaha. I love art projects because they are easily adaptable to ANY age and ability level of the various students I work with. From my 3 year olds, to upper elementary, to students with cognitive impairments and various disabilities, art provides an outlet and in some form all my students can participate! I am asking for art and craft supplies such as markers, crayons, glue, paper, glitter, sequins, etc that my students can use to make various projects throughout the year. I am also asking for basic classroom supplies such as paper towels, Clorox wipes, plastic bags, Kleenex to keep my speech room clean. With a clean and inviting space, I know my students will be able to do their best work!
