Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are preschool and kindergarten children who have multiple disabilities and are medically fragile. While I have taught in Lawrence for twenty-six years, my class has moved to a lot of schools lately! My old building had a fire and we moved to a big school for a bit. This year, we are in an Early Childhood building. Since my students tend to "taste test" everything, I was unable to keep most of the materials from the school with the fire. I had to start from scratch for the unique needs of my students. Most function at an infant-toddler level. Some can crawl or pull to stand, while others have infant level motor functioning. Some have hearing and/or vision deficits. Most have medical issues. All are absolutely wonderful!
My Project
Communication is the most important component of my classroom curriculum. My students are severely disabled and have developmental, physical and medical issues. They can easily learn to be helpless. Communication is the key to helping them to be an active member of their community.
The SuperTalker FT from Ablenet is a great new device that can help my students begin to independently and spontaneously express themselves.
The machine can be programmed for each individual student's needs and abilities. It can start with only one or two options, then build to eight choices of words or phrases. Being introduced to this machine is just the beginning. Once they learn to communicate with a basic communication device, they can move on to more complex machines through their personal insurance that may last them a life time!
Giving a child who cannot vocalize the gift of communication is giving them the gift of a productive and satisfying life! Please help me to put my amazing and wonderful students on the path to success!
