My students need copies of Thomas Payne's Common Sense to complete a non-fiction unit in 12th grade English.
High school seniors are excited for their quickly approaching graduation date. The best way to engage them in learning is to provide curriculum and lessons that are relevant to their lives.
While literature provides a means for students to relate to characters and to learn lessons, it is also important for students to read texts that have a deeper meaning.
Students want relevant assignments. Since 12th grade students are learning how read materials to identify bias and purpose, Thomas Payne's Common Sense will provide students with a means of identifying both as well as articulating their own ideas as it relates to their lives as Americans.
This unit will be taught in a 12th grade English class and will complement the related unit in their government class.
Doing this will give students opportunities to connect learning from two different courses and to see how the two complement each other. Furthermore, students' learning will be enriched in both content areas and result in higher learning as well.
