A typical day in my classroom revolves around students learning and participating in math activities in the morning and language arts in the afternoon with supplemented science and social studies. The biggest challenge for my students is getting them up to grade level by the end of the year.
My school is an older school located just outside of the city limits.
It is located in a low income area and 40-60% of our students receive free lunch. Every student is also entitled to a free breakfast. Our school is very old, and often times in need of repair, but with failing levies, things get patch jobs that work for the time being. I was lucky enough to get permission from our principal last year to spruce up my room with cartoon animal paintings done by one of my local artist friends.
Students often don't have money for supplies or extra supplies throughout the school year. Our school is lucky enough to qualify for Crayons to Computers a free store for teachers to provide extra supplies for these students. All of my students are very sweet and loving and have a desire to learn. I was very proud of the progress my class made last year going from 80% below grade level at the beginning of the year to 75% above or at grade level by the end of the year.
My Project
The books that I chose for this project would provide my classroom with good read aloud books that fit both our language arts and math units. I also like how I can tie in some social studies and science strands into our language arts units by using multicultural books or books on nature for two of our units. I built my current library from donations, garage sales, and library sales. Most of my books are older and in fairly good condition, but I would love to have some really nice read aloud books with amazing pictures to show on the overhead for the class to see and fall in love with. I would love to spruce up my library with books that I would not really ever be able to afford on my own and these would last for years to come.
This project will not only make a difference in my life but also in the lives of the students I teach.
They will be exposed to new literature that is modern and some of it award winning. I will also be sharing these books with my mentor/co-teacher to teach with in her room as well. It will be really nice to have some quality read aloud books to share with the children that go directly with each unit of study.
