My students need hands-on learning materials to be able to practice and master the skills that are aligned to meet the Common Core Skills for Kindergarten students.
Michelle Obama teaches children that they can be anything they want to be and to dream big, not to let their economic backgrounds hold them back. This is the same message I am trying to instill in my Kindergarten students. We are never too young to dream and work towards our goals.
My students live in rural Iowa where we have a large percentage of our families that live in poverty.
Our students face numerous adversities at home (lack of nice clothes, enough food, and even sharing housing with other families). Our students come to school HUNGRY- hungry for food, hungry for love/attention and hungry for knowledge. Our teaching staff would love to "fix" these situations for our students, but the need is too great. We strive to make the 8 hours with us at school as fun, educational and loving as we possibly can make this time.
My Project
I have only requested 2 items to be purchased, but within these 2 items are numerous opportunities. The first is a "Question of the Day" chart with questions to be answered by the students. Each child will be able to show his/her uniqueness with answering the daily question. Students will be able to practice the essential math skills of creating and understanding a graph, counting and comparing numbers.
The second item is a math kit that has materials to teach all of the essential math skills that are expected to be learned by Kindergarten students following the Common Core. The areas covered include: counting and cardinality, geometry, measurement and data, number and operations in base ten and operations and algebraic thinking.
One hundred years from now it will not matter what kind of car you drove or how much money you made, but you will know that you made a difference in children's lives.
Not only will you be helping them to learn the essential skills for the common core, you will be teaching them the gift of how one small action can touch/impact the lives of many people. Thank you for being the "pot of gold" at the end of my children's rainbow!
