Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I loved school when I was a student. It is my goal that my students love school just as much as I did. It's one of the reasons why I choose teaching. I try to provide a clean, safe and inviting room environment for my students. I also take pride in creating challenging and memorable lessons.
My students come to school each day with a desire to learn.
The majority of my students are English Language Learners. My school is a 100% free lunch school located in the inner city outside of Los Angeles, California. We work hard to create a community of scholars that will leave us ready to tackle the world on their journey to successful entry college and beyond.
My Project
I teach in a school that hasn't adopted a reading program since 2000. Our English Language Arts materials are old and outdated. A couple of years ago I discovered Scholastic Storyworks. I noticed that students were engaged and eager to tackle the stories in the magazine. I enjoyed the convenience of lesson plans and activities already being created for me.
Unfortunately, this year, Storyworks was part of the "cut" list when a new principal took over.
We need these materials so my students can have access to nonfiction, fiction, drama, debate, writing tasks, current events. My students will benefit from the leveled texts as well as from the preset lesson plans and activities provided with the subscription.
