Parents send us the best that they have. Although many of my students face unique challenges every day before they even come into my classroom, they come in eager to learn. Most of my students live in poverty and their parents hope that their child's education will lead to a better future. Ninety-eight percent of my students come from minority backgrounds, with fifty percent being English Language Learners.
Many kindergartners have not had a preschool experience and I want to do my best to make it a fantastic year for them.
Very few children have access to educational toys and books. It is my job as their teacher to expose my students to as much as I possibly can. I want my students to enjoy coming to school and learning.
My Project
My students are bright children who love to learn. With these educational centers my students will be able to learn while they play.
Students will enjoy challenging their minds with these puzzles and when they complete a puzzle they will have successfully met a Common Core standard.
While in math centers, students will work with Decomposing Numbers Addition Fluency Puzzles, Simple Operations Puzzles, Counting & Number Recognition Puzzles, Base 10 Puzzles and Equation Match-Ups puzzles. These will not only teach math skills but also increase small muscle development, develop eye-hand coordination, improve memory skills, increase problem solving skills and build spatial perception. Students will use these puzzles to learn and play and to be actively engaged with hands-on activities.
After math centers students will engage in literacy centers. The Contractions Match-Ups, Compound Words Match-Ups, and Sound-It-Out Digraphs Puzzles will help students learn beyond ABC's. It increases their visual spacial awareness and develops a deeper understanding of these themes and topics. All children learn differently and puzzles may be their medium for grasping an understanding of certain concepts such as contractions and compound words.
These are excellent ways for children to read and become proficient in math. Soon students will make the connection between letters and spoken words along with a deeper understanding of numbers. Not only will they be reading but also building vocabulary and making sense of whole numbers. Studies have shown children who come from poverty have a limited vocabulary compared with children their age who do not live in poverty. Students from poverty also score lower in standardized test in the areas of reading and math. These materials will prepare my students to master Common Core standards.
