Common Core 4th Grade: Nonfiction Enrichment For New Grade
My students need nonfiction books about social studies, science, biographies, and hobbies to help meet the Common Core goal of reading nonfiction 50% of the time.
The mission at our school is "Learn, Grow, Lead." Our program teaches students to set goals, dream big, and become leaders in their communities. Students are most excited about reading when they can choose their books, and I want to make sure I have lots of nonfiction choices that are exciting!
My students are 4th graders in a California school.
This is my first year teaching 4th grade so I also need to build my library with lots of books about California and missions. This is a healthy community that is very athletic and community-minded. Reading is a favorite subject of many students in my class. I'm hoping to reach students who are not as excited about reading by having books about careers, cultures, hobbies, and many other topics kids love. Sometimes it just takes one book to forever change a student's attitude toward reading!
My Project
The collection of books I am requesting is truly inspiring. Many of the books will help students get to know the great state of California as well as help prepare them for the big 4th grade mission project. I have also selected a few books about sports figures they may be interested in learning about. Some of the career books will help students when they create dream boards as they choose their colleges and careers. I've also picked a number of books about kids from around the world to help them gain a greater awareness of the beautiful world around us.
This is an exciting time in education.
We are finally shifting away from isolated skills toward rich literature and standards that will better prepare students for college and their futures. One of the components of the new standards is to spend half the time with nonfiction reading. Students will not be reading to take a quiz or for a certain number of points but to gain a deeper understanding of what they are reading. These books will inspire students in a meaningful and lasting ways.
