Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
It was so unexpected, and so sudden. When I waved goodbye to my 22 Kindergarten students that Friday afternoon none of us thought it would be for the last time this school year. Schools in our district closed on a Friday evening in March and never reopened. Although it was essential for the safety of everyone involved, it has left us all scrambling to make sense of the school closures, and find fun, creative, and engaging materials and approaches to teaching online. My 22 amazing, smart, funny, and inquisitive kindergarteners now must learn from home where most of my students don't have access to any learning materials.
It's important to me that despite all the changes my students and I are facing, the quality of their education stays as consistent as possible.
Due to how unexpected the school closure was, all of my teaching resources were left in my classroom. I have purchased some materials already to help my class transition to online learning, but now that school closures have been extended for the remainder of the school year, I am in need of additional resources in order to continue to provide my students the education they deserve.
My Project
Overnight I went from teaching hands on, interactive lessons in a classroom my students considered to be a second home, to trying to reach them through a computer screen with no available resources. Providing my students with a quality education that encourages creativity, exploration, student discourse, and academic growth has always been my top priority, and that hasn’t changed.
Now that all my interactions with my students must happen through a computer screen, it’s that much more critical I have access to visuals, manipulatives, and resources to help facilitate students' understanding and success.
The ink will help me to print lesson resources such as vocabulary cards, character cards, and sight word cards in color to help increase student engagement and excitement for learning. I will then laminate these so students can use them over and over again. I will use all of these different ELA and Math resources to model lessons in a way that students can connect with and relate to the materials and experiences they are familiar with from the classroom.
Your generosity will help me to provide my students with the quality lessons and learning experiences they deserve to have so that they can be successful.
