We are a school located outside of Tampa, Florida with a high poverty rate. My students are eclectic and artistic. They are preteens full of ambition and emotions. This project is for our athletics department, specifically, our hip-hop competitive dance team and coach. These are 7th and 8th graders who show talent and promise in athletics and are channeling their passion into dance. We are a performing arts school and encourage, teach, and mentor students in the arts in all areas!
We were hard hit by Hurricane Irma, so it is really important for kids to get back to work.
The outside of our school was physically damaged and we still have some work to do to bring it back to how it looked before the storm. Our administration is working hard to make this happen. We are all trying to get back to normal, but some things just take time. For many students, this storm was emotionally draining. Our students are needing routine, stability, and encouragement that things WILL be even better with time.
My Project
This project is for our Hip Hip Dance Teacher and Coach. Our community was hard hit by Hurricane Irma. Our students and their families had to either evacuate for days or find a safe place in a shelter. There is a financial strain on families when you have to evacuate.
Students are hardworking and always try to contribute to our team performance costumes, but this year has been quite different due to the hurricane and the damage it brought.
FEMA has helped to ease the financial burden by qualifying all students for assistance with lunch. Our families and students were VERY appreciative. Asking students and families to help with performance clothing for the team is really out of the question right now. We are all trying to get back to normal as quickly as possible. This includes major clean-ups and replacing of lost home goods. The power was out in our community for many for a full week. Our families lost all the food they had and this has caused an additional financial burden.
Finally, I believe that our kids just need to get back to work and start to enjoy their days at school again! The dance team is very talented and brings a sense of joy and optimism to our school. They are really fun to watch and all the students get excited about their performances. By donating to this project you will be giving the kids the red performance shorts they need to perform in competitions.
I hope that with your help and Dick's Hurricane Relief Fund for Sports, the Dance Team can receive the shorts they need to sparkle and shine again. You will be bringing much-needed relief and support to our school!
