My students are a diverse group of bright, curious and very hardworking middle school students who range in age from 10-15 years old.
My middle school is part of a diverse community where more then half our population receives free or reduced-price lunch, and about 65% of the students are minorities from all over the world.
Being a part of a diverse community is a great advantage because we learn so much from each other. Many of my students are English Language Learners who are often new to the United States. It is amazing watching native Spanish speaking students communicating with students who only speak Chinese or Urdu.
My Project
I teach English as a second language and social studies in a combined class. I know I am so lucky! My students read, write, speak and listen in every class in order to help their language acquisition and grasp social studies concepts.
Imagine a room full of students recording and broadcasting about what they learned in social studies while practicing their English!
The possibilities are endless. Debates, news programs, plays, songs, and so much more can be recorded for students to show their peers, teachers, family and friends! Students will be able to take what they have learned in English and social studies and be creative with the information! This project will fund a green screen, microphone, lighting and an iPad stand so we can create our own broadcasting studio in our classroom!
Students learn best by doing! When students are creating they are reaching the highest level of learning and understanding. They are able to take what they learned and make something of it!
