This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are from all over the world; Somalia, Rwanda Guatemala, Venezuela, Nepali, Syria, Iraq, Tanzania, Congo, and Uganda to name a few. I have over ten languages spoken in my classroom. As an ESL teacher, I want to provide my students with books that represent the array of personalities and cultures that are in my classroom.
My English as a Second Language (ESL) students are curious, brilliant, and enthusiastic scholars who want to learn and excel.
They deserve basic classroom supplies that will help them become better readers and writers.
My Project
Comics and graphic novels will help me engage my most reluctant readers to read and stay engaged in a book. Comics and graphic novels develop and reinforce reading skills like inference, demonstrate punctuation and grammar rules, and explain figurative language. It's low pressure reading that will help my students develop their skills as readers and encourage them to pick up more books. These books will continue to enhance the print-rich classroom that I want to create.
Reading is reading, no matter the format!
Comics and graphic novels have exciting characters that my students know and can relate to! These books will give my students a chance to see that print rich books exist in all genres.
