I teach an eager group of third graders who are always asking questions and are excited to learn. They come from a variety of backgrounds, and most of them are kids living in rural Montana. They are curious and not afraid to take risks and try new things, but some come from homes where the school is a safe place to feel loved.
Some are high achievers who are determined to do well in all academic areas, while others have difficulty simply sitting at a desk and focusing.
They all want to do well and are extremely proud when they master a new skill or make a new friend. They are at an age where they still love to learn and have a million stories to tell you about all of their experiences.
My Project
Even the most reluctant readers in my class right now will pick up a graphic novel. The creators of TOON books understand the appeal and created a series that is aimed at engaging these apprehensive and struggling readers while providing content that is at their level.
I want to get these books in the hands of my students as I know that the only way for students to improve in reading is to read.
In addition to providing an engaging book, TOON books give study guides and teaching materials to ensure that the learning experience is maximized. Finally, after students finish reading a great book, they have the opportunity to create their own graphic novel. My students will be so excited that they won't even realize they are becoming readers and writers.
