Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students in my classroom need support in their structured learning classroom. All of my students require intensive supports and predictable, consistent routines and structure throughout the school day to be able to reach their academic goals. In order for them to reach their goals, they need to engage in learning activities in the following areas: communication, social skills, reading, writing, math, and behavior management.
My students come from a lower socioeconomic background that currently has very little resources to splurge for classroom supplies and books.
Many of them are considered homeless due to their home life situation and all of them are receiving free or reduced-price lunch. Because of their life circumstances, we talk about the American Dream often. We discuss that their dreams can come true if they work at it and dedicate themselves to doing well in school. But how can they do that if they don't have all the supplies needed to be successful?
Even though they are only 10-11 years old, in many ways they have already overcome so much. I have made it my mission to help them get the resources they need to help them closer to achieving their goals.
My Project
My students need a rich selection of history focused comic books to help my students learn more about events and people who have molded the world we currently live in.
What is better to help them learn about important history than through comic books where stories are engaging, efficient, and effective by providing visual support for those who struggle with decoding and reading comprehension.
Our previous school librarian did not believe that comic books and graphic novels were viable reading materials so they are non-existent in our school library. I, on the other hand, believe that Graphic Novels are great reading for those who have difficulty reading grade-level texts or those who need and require additional support to read. Graphic Novels originally written by Charles M. Schultz adapted into graphic novel versions will bring reading opportunities to my most reluctant readers!
