Comfy Seating Invites Extended Reading

My students need comfortable seatings such as a loveseat and chair to relax and read. These cozy pieces of furniture will create a welcoming environment and be a wonderful complement to the new reading area.

My Students

As a media specialist in a Title I school with a high ESOL population, our PreK-5 students are ethnically diverse and a reflection of the wonderful melting pot in metro Atlanta.

Regardless of their background, they work hard to make academic strides.

This was clearly seen when our students met and surpassed their reading goal for the school year! Many of our students who were struggling readers at the beginning of the year improved and were able to read on grade level by the end of the year!

Even though they may have different social or economic backgrounds, when it comes to reading, none of that matters. They share similar interests in book topics, have a love of reading, and are equally excited to visit the media center to pick out their next read.

I want to provide a space where they can enjoy reading!

My Project

My students are excited readers and enjoy visiting the library. However, this space lacks comfortable seating. Most of the furniture is hard and discourage students to sit for extended periods of time while reading. They fidget and squirm in their seats to readjust to a better position when sitting in the hard-backed wooden chairs. These constant movements cause them to be distracted from their book or the task at hand.

To maximize comfort, and thereby creating a welcoming environment, I will be furnishing our reading nook with cozy seatings such as a Dorel loveseat and chair.

Providing this inviting space will inspire and encourage students to read for pleasure and academic growth. By focusing on their reading, students will increase reading fluency and comprehension. Furthermore, these furnishing enhancements will allow them to feel relaxed and offer a safe environment to explore all the resources library has to offer.
