It has always been a dream of mine to develop a love of reading in my students. Most students shamelessly admit to hours of watching television, or hours spent playing video games. Something pretty amazing happened once in my teaching career. An 8th grader told me that he couldn't wait to get home to finish his book, and that his video game would have to wait. The excitement in his voice was palpable. He had a certain smirk on his face that he couldn't wipe off if he tried. What he experienced is priceless; this feeling is something that I want all of my students to feel--the joy in reading. There's a trance that reading can put us into: with the turning of each page, the characters come alive; the places become real. It has been said that reading can take us places when we have nowhere to go. There is a feeling of accomplishment in finishing what has been started. My students need to experience this.
My Project
Reading happens every day in my classroom. "You can find magic wherever you look. Sit back and relax all you need is a book." This quote by Dr. Seuss expresses what I envision my classroom looking like one day. The majority of my students haven't yet had the chance to experience reading for enjoyment...and sitting in traditional desks doesn't allow for that experience.
Flexible seating options will give my students the chance to become lost in their book and the unknown worlds that books can take them to.
The magic can happen when students get lost in unfamiliar worlds of their books from the comfort of various seating options.
