Help me give my students alternative seating and a weighted blanket in our classroom to allow them to maximize their learning while fulfilling their sensory needs.
I work in a middle school-aged emotional support classroom. My students have a variety of social/emotional needs as well as sensory processing needs that cannot be met in a regular education classroom. They are creative, compassionate, and caring individuals who have all faced some sort of adversity in their lives. While in the classroom, they have always had struggles and it is my job to make sure that our room is set up to be a safe and comfortable environment to promote a positive learning atmosphere.
The students in my class go above and beyond to help both staff and students in our school.
They volunteer for numerous projects and activities that benefit our school, such as our school-wide positive behavior reinforcement system, our garden club, and our breakfast cart. This project gives me the opportunity to go above and beyond for my students and provide the flexible seating they need to have success in the classroom.
My Project
Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. During independent work times, they choose a location in the classroom that works for them. Currently, my students are choosing to work in a variety of locations in our room such as: at different tables, sitting under tables with clipboards, or sitting or laying on the floor with a clipboard. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given a choice in their seating. They almost always make good choices about where they sit, are more engaged, and get more work completed than when they are just sitting at their desks.
My students are noticeably more engaged in their work and less disruptive of their peers when they are given a choice of where to work.
The bean bag chairs will allow for comfortable floor seating and can be easily moved to different areas of the classroom. These chairs paired with a weighted blanket will be a safe place for students to take much needed sensory breaks before a transition or during free time.
I have seen how choice can positively affect my student's work and demeanor and hope that the additional options will help us grow even more!
