My students work in an integrated classroom filled with various abilities. They cooperate in groups and build relationships that encourage one another to become better learners. They enjoy reading and writing workshop, where they can take advantage of flexible seating around the room so that they control where they learn best. They push themselves in math to learn numerous strategies to solve problems, knowing there is no single solution that is “right.” They explore engineering projects and mindfulness that encourages growth mindset, and to know they can problem solve and be life long learners.
Rugs add comfort to the classroom which makes kids more eager to participate and learn. It gives them a designated area that they can use for play, reading, or other mindful activities. Most importantly a rug allows for the sense of community in the classroom, where a teacher can call students over to a meeting place. Specifically, this rug will he used as a meeting place for morning meeting and minilessons. Students can also use the rug for building during recess or STEM time, and to work during readers and writers workshop time when flexible seating is encouraged. It will serve many purposes and be an edition that makes our classroom feel like a home away from home.
