My students come from a modest, working class to low-income backgrounds.
Our school has been hit hard by the current economic crisis, and simply do not have the same educational opportunities that children have in other areas.
We are a Title 1 school and a vast majority of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Our school may lack the material privileges that other schools are fortunate to have, but our students certainly make up for it with talent, determinations and sheer intelligence.
My Project
My kindergarten class enjoys reading independently. They ask to read independently everyday as soon as they step into our classroom. We have been doing Daily 5 - Read to Self since the beginning of the school year. I would like to add flexible seating to this program. This approach will allow my students to freely pick an area to sit and read in. I am asking for a variety of flex space comfy seats and various soft seats with back support. These items will add joy to my energetic kindergarten students.
Flexible seating in our classroom would be inviting for my students to practice creativity and become aware of their own personal space.
My students will now be able to make good choices for their area or comfy chair they pick. They will have to make decisions on their own. "Would this space and comfy seat be a good choice for me?" "Will I be able to focus?" Not only can they use this during Daily 5, it can be used throughout the day. The comfy seats and soft seats could be used when they are completing various task in the classroom.
