Third grade is such an exciting time for young students!
They show growth and independence socially and intellectually, and their skills in reading and writing are refined and expanded with guidance.
Third grade students move past the stage of 'learning to read' towards 'reading to learn'. My students enjoy graphic novels, picture books, trivia books, science books, and chapter books. They also love researching topics on their own or in pairs to explore topics in science, math and social studies. Reading independently and with stamina is an important skill for them to practice during this time.
I have a diverse classroom which is departmentalized by subject area. I am their Reading/Language Arts/Social Studies teacher and teach 44 students. Our school values inclusion and diversity, and my students include gifted and talented students, students from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds, and students with special needs such as dyslexia and autism. They love to learn about other cultures and perspectives, and enjoy discussing their thoughts and reflections passionately!
My Project
My third graders love to read, but we don't have a lot of space to really get comfy! We are housed in a small portable classroom with little storage and need wobble cushions, bean bag chairs, and floor pillows for quiet​ focused reading time to develop our skills in reading independently and with stamina.
These seating options will provide my students with seating options to be able to focus and become immersed in their reading and learning.
Without these cushions, the only options we have had for reading spaces have been at the students' desks with regular chairs, or lying on a small carpet in our reading area. There has never been enough space for all (or even many) students to stretch out and find their own space to read. This can be a difficult environment for even typical students, and students who are struggling readers have even more difficulty focusing at times. With these seating options, students will be able to move around the classroom and find the best spot for themselves to settle in and enjoy their reading fully.
