My second grade classroom is filled with classroom books, lively students, and an interactive SmartBoard. My goal is to have 100% of my students on grade level for reading and math. It's a difficult task, but I am willing to provide support, guidance, and teachable moments whenever possible.
My school is in a low socioeconomic area with many students eager to learn and teachers who are dedicated.
We see many students go through many hardships in their home lives all before they enter third grade. Many come from families with broken homes and their grandparents are raising them. The teachers are here because we love teaching and we want to offer guidance, education, and a future for these young, vibrant students.
My Project
My students in second grade are learning to read on their own. We have a designated time when we read quietly on their own and they choose books on their level. I have noticed my students did not like to sit in their chairs for long periods of time and I don't blame them.
I was thinking I could make a comfy reading nook with calming bean bag chairs.
We could take turns by having a different group of four students designated for the bean bag chairs for our quiet reading time. They will look forward to reading on their own because of the cozy and comfort of the calming bean bags.
The bean bag chairs would be a great idea and huge incentive in our classroom. I am looking forward to creating a comfy atmosphere while developing their reading skills. It is a win-win for everyone!
