Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work at a Title I school. The school has a very diverse population. Many of my students come from low income, single parent households. The majority of students at my school receive free or reduced breakfast and lunch. For some students, this is their only meal of the day.
School is a magical place for my first graders.
My students come with all different abilities and curiosities. First grade is a very important year of building foundational skills. My students are learning to read and write. I spend a lot of time modifying and extending lessons and projects for the individual needs of my students.
My students bring a lot to my classroom. Every year I have an entirely different group that brings a wealth of prior knowledge and experience. I love to push and challenge my students to do things they never thought they could do. It is magical to see a student realize that they are reading, or when they write that challenging sentence without assistance. If I can instill a love of learning with my first graders, then I feel like I have set them up for success for years to come.
My Project
In my classroom I use a learning tool called Daily Five. During Daily Five students work independently on their reading, writing, listening, and word building skills. It is their time to work towards personal goals that they have set with me to improve their abilities.
My students will be more excited to read when sitting on a giant bean bag or cozy chair.
When students are comfortable and relaxed their imagination is allowed to soar and they can make more connections with the books they are reading. With this donation, my students will be able to pick where they want to sit, and what they want to sit on. It is so exciting and a great tool to encourage students to want to read.
