My students need a place to utilize our listening center that provides safe and appropriate physical access for my students with disabilities. The Comfy Corner Listening Center would allow my students to independently access this center.
My classroom serves students with disabilities ranging from kindergarten to the 5th grade. My students have varying disabilities from cerebral palsy, Down Syndrome, traumatic brain injury, intellectual disabilities, and more. Our classroom is specially designed with instruction that is targeted to meet the needs of each individual student.
Our campus is currently closed due to extensive flood damage sustained during Hurricane Harvey.
We are temporarily located at another campus within the district. We are moving back to Mauriceville soon! We will be using portable buildings for at least a year while our school building is repaired.
My Project
Since Hurricane Harvey destroyed our classroom furniture, it has been especially difficult on my students with physical disabilities. Our materials are being used on make-shift tables out of crates or on the floor.
Currently, the listening center is not utilized efficiently for all students because they cannot all physically access the materials safely and independently.
This listening center is designed in a way that all of my students can access this center and enjoy listening to books. There are so many challenges that we are facing post-Harvey. Physical access to materials is a basic need of my students with disabilities such as cerebral palsy and confined to a wheel chair. My students need a place to utilize our listening center that provides safe and appropriate physical access for my students with disabilities. The Comfy Corner Listening Center would allow my students to independently access this center.
