As a teacher in an economically disadvantaged school, my students are faced with many difficulties both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, my amazing students come to school ready to learn and tackle new challenges head-on. My 7th grade classroom is comprised of a variety of students: advanced, on-level, special education and ESL. Some have learning and/or emotional disabilities.
"Can I stand up while I finish my work?" I often have students ask to stand or sit in the classroom; I encourage this movement as it helps with learning.
They love to read, and the autonomy to choose how or where the sit helps them focus on their reading. They thrive when given lots of positive attention and choices. Since a large portion of my students is economically disadvantaged, they may not have the same life experiences many of us see as "typical."
My Project
My students love to work independently and in small groups. Sometimes the best place for that to happened isn't in the classroom. My team partner and I have started a nook outside of our classroom to provide a quiet, inviting learning space.
Comfort is important when learning.
Creating an inviting, soothing place to learn can make all the difference. For this reason, we want to create a space that encourages collaborative work for our students. Lighting, seating, and arrangement all play a hand in our creation. My project list includes fluorescent light covers to create a soothing environment, sheers for the windows to allow soft light in from the outside, and bouncy bands for movement. Our students already LOVE this space, but we want to expand it to invite more of them to enjoy it. Please help us make this space all that it can be!
