My kindergarten students walk into our classroom every day eager to discover the exciting adventure of the day. At this time of year they can't wait to see which letters and sounds are introduced to make a word. Never in a million years would you imagine the excitement on one of their faces as they blend a word for the first time. I teach at a Title I school in Louisiana where the majority of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.
My students are excited to learn, full of energy and creative.
The excitement of a five year old entering a classroom every morning is contagious. I listen as they unpack and they share their plans for which seat they will use, which story they want to read with their partner and I can't help but smile. Many of my students are being raised in a single parent home and several are being raised by grandparents. Giving them the opportunity to make choices in the classroom and the ability to learn in a way that makes them comfortable is always a priority.
My Project
All of our students want to learn comfortable at school. This helps them with the basic idea that school is a fun and comfortable learning environment. As they move into this mindset, they will be able to do team and independent work to build skills.
The comfy seating sets will play many roles in the classroom for the students.
First and foremost, it will give all students a chance to find a spot that fits them best.
The comfy learning sets will allow me to create small, quiet learning environments within the classroom setting, which will allow for small group and partner work.
