I teach 6th grade special education and my class is fully comprised of students with special needs. Over 60% of the student body at our school are on free and reduced lunch, which include a majority of the students in my classroom. The school is located in an urban/suburban setting, and it is a minority majority school. There are a wide variety of environments and cultures in which my students live. In addition, our school is home to a large population of students on refugee status. It is a place where students are able to learn to embrace diversity and unique cultures. The students in my room are all hard workers!
My Project
Many of my students struggle to focus on learning when they are focused on trying to sit still at their desk. Studies show that when students are able to move during class, they exhibit more on-task behaviors. My students are noticeably more engaged in their learning activities when they are given the freedom to fidget and the opportunity to find a spot where they can do their best work.
On top of being more engaged in learning, Flexible seating is a fun and practical way to give my students the tools to practice decision making and take ownership of learning in a way that best fits their own unique learning styles.
Middle school students crave independence and choice, and flexible seating meets that need in my students. The wobble cushions, floor cushion, and floor desks will allow my students to make decisions to own their education and find a deeper engagement in their learning tasks.
