Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This project will benefit 24 active second graders and allow them to work in small groups on the floor comfortably. Flexible seating lets students choose their own work space for certain periods of the day. Children work in discourse situations for reading, math and writing.
Second graders are expected to sit longer and concentrate for more extensive periods of time due to common core standards.
Much of their work is done in small groups on the carpet. These flex-space comfy seats will encourage students to be more comfortable in their discussions.
Many of my students are bilingual and learning English as well as the second grade curriculum. They need a chance to move around and be encouraged to speak english in a comfy group setting.
My Project
These seats will allow four triads of students to sit in flex-space comfy chairs multiple times each day. They will be able to have discourse discussions in these brightly colored chairs. The green chairs will be designated for the leader of each triad. This role changes and is critical for teaching students to become leaders. The blue comfy seats will be for the others in the group who will actively be discussing reading concepts, math ideas, and writing thoughts before they get transferred to paper. The future of education involves flexible seating and much discourse each day.
Students will have choice in their learning environment!
They will be able to comfortably sit on the floor in discourse groups. This is a perfect scaffold for round table discussions later in life. Not only will students be focusing on the academics, but they will learn to work together in small groups.
Discussion discourse needs to be taught and what a bright, colorful way to motivate students to want to learn this way! They will look forward to contributing in small group discourse discussions.
