Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are from all over the world! Just a few examples: Republic of Congo, Burundi, Thailand, Nepal, Venezuela, Colombia, Albania, Bosnia, Iran, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, and Honduras.
Our school is a neighborhood school in Hartford, Connecticut.
Life for these kids is often not so easy, not the life a "typical" child in the US knows of. Their worlds are completely turned upside down within hours. After the initial excitement of coming to the US, reality kicks in. This tough reality doesn't just pass easily. It takes years and years to get used to the new culture and language.
My students work very hard to learn English and to fulfill their parents' dream of having a better life in the USA.
My Project
Having a nice rug in the classroom will make my students feel nice, cozy, and comfortable!! What else do we need for successful learning?
My goal is to make my ELL students feel special and welcomed in the United States.
I believe that whatever they are exposed to at this young age will affect them for the rest of their lives.
They are new to this country and valuing and cherishing them will help them learn the language. Language learning is very hard, especially when you are so self-aware as teens are. I want to create a place for my kids where they feel safe and comfortable. This also includes a nice map in our classroom. They always get so excited when we talk about their countries!
My dream is to sit on that carpet in a circle, play some memory games with vocabulary words, looking at the map and finding everyone's homelands, have some snacks on special occasions or simply just share stories!
