I teach in a low-income/high poverty school district. My students are faced with challenges not only in school, but at home as well. Despite the many trials they encounter, I am looking to instill a love for learning and a sense of belonging.
Teaching these students is not a job, it's a joy for me!
I love coming to work and hearing about everything from their winning play in the baseball game to their dog's birthday party! They thrive on positive attention.
A number of my students come from a single parent household and receive free or reduced-price lunch based on their socioeconomic status. From the second they walk through the door of my classroom I want them to know they are loved, they belong, and they have control over their futures! I consider myself "blessed" to have the title of their "teacher."
My Project
My students are going to use the soft seat cushions and "flex-space" beanbag seats whenever they are reading by themselves or with a partner. I want my students to be able to pick a cozy spot in the room and enjoy a good fit book of their choosing. I didn't want chairs because I wouldn't be able to have a class set of cozy chairs. With these cushions, my students will be able to move them around the classroom to a spot of their choice. I believe that reading is the most important thing to teach young children. I always try to make reading a fun thing in my classroom.
This project will help my students by allowing them a chance to pick a cozy spot in the room, with a book that they can enjoy, and read, read, read.
I'm hoping that the students who don't particularly like to read will start to when they can read with a comfy cushion. It's important to be in a great spot to read.
