Imagine coming to a new country with your family and building a wonderful life with people who look like you and speak like you. Now imagine starting school and being spoken to in a different language all day. We have a very large migrant population at our school. The majority of my class are English language learners and are trying to master 2 languages at once!
As a teacher at a low income, majority ELL school, my students are faced with challenges inside and outside the school building each and every day.
Some of them have parents who do not know any English, some of them are seeking asylum from terrible conditions in their countries, others have parents who are students themselves. All of my students receive free lunch at the school due to their socioeconomic background. I believe that their parents' socioeconomic status, background, participation in their life, race, etc. - none of that should determine the type of education they receive and the access to supplies that they have.
My Project
Students are expected to spend so much time sitting still at a desk these days--and for some activities, it is important for them to be sitting at a desk. I think it is important to give students options for seating when it comes to independent reading and writing. I believe that children may be able to enjoy reading within the classroom a bit more and want to read for longer if they are comfortable. Bean bag chairs and cozy pillows can serve as a way to get kids excited about independent reading and writing time.
Next year, our school is becoming a global school and my grade level will be focused on South America.
I am hoping to use the pocket charts to highlight some Spanish words and/or phrases of the week that we will be learning.
