The students in my midcoast town come to me excited to learn. For many, kindergarten is their first formal school experience, the first step in their educational journey. It is my responsibility to give these children the very best introduction to learning.
I see these children as our future artists, musicians, scientists, engineers, authors, and mathematicians.
My kindergarten class is filled with diverse styles. Some children need to stand to learn, others like to bounce, and still more enjoy lying on their tummies while working. All of my students love to use their hands to work on projects. The classroom is always buzzing with the children engaging in their work.
Kindergarten is a magical year when children embark on a journey toward literacy. Reading and writing are skills they will take with them for the rest of their lives. Just as adults enjoy a book while sitting back in a recliner at home, my students need a cozy space that makes reading and writing a natural and comfortable practice.
By providing a calm carpet, beanbag and couch, I am setting my students up to view their literacy as something that is enjoyable.
They can grab their favorite stories and a friend as they head to the comfy, cozy literacy spot to develop their reading skills. They can bring a clipboard and paper to the rug as they write their own stories. This literacy spot will inspire and nurture my readers and writers.
