Our school is a Title 1 school with a low socio-economic and transient population. 99% of the children receive free/reduced-price lunch. Students are provided food bags for the weekends. The school has a family resource center to support families.
Many of our students are faced with social and emotional instability situations but in spite of this, they are excited and eager to learn.
We have a blocking schedule for our third graders. Therefore, I am able to get to know, work with and reach all 55 of our third graders here.
My Project
No one wants to sit on hard plastic chairs all day or on the hard tile floor!
Students who are more comfortable are more engaged and this leads to mastery of content.
Throughout the day we have several opportunities where students either work in groups, partners, or by themselves. This is the time when I like students to be able to chose a location around the room that works best for them to be able to work comfortably and with focus. They also get to choose special seating. Right now all I have is cheap stuff that I have had to pay for with my own money. These cheap pillows and mats tear up easily and therefore, I either have to replace them with more of my own money or the kids have to do with out. The students absolutely love this flexible seating and being able to feel more "at home" than "at school". This is why I am asking for this wide variety of flexible, comfortable seating to offer them.
