My class is made up of 21 unique, kind-hearted, creative kids. They love to work together on projects and use technology to creatively showcase their understanding. My class has a wide range of learners, but I have found that incorporating student-centered, hands-on learning experiences in which students are able to get up and interact with each other and create their own learning experiences can really level the playing field and give all students equal opportunities to be successful. My students attend a low-income, ethnically diverse school in Haverhill, Massachusetts where 56.3% of the student population come from economically disadvantaged homes and qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. These students are such hard-working, motivated learners who deserve every opportunity out there to help make them successful 21st-century learners. I believe in my students and know in my heart that they are certainly off to great places in life.
My Project
When my fourth graders first enter the classroom, the first thing they do is go to their desks, take their chairs down, and have a seat while listening to our morning announcements. They continue to sit in these same seats for several more parts of the school day! Don't get me wrong, there are still plenty of opportunities for movement and options for sitting around the classroom to do work, too.
Slowly but surely, I am trying to incorporate some more flexible seating options in our classroom, and I'd love to get a new carpet area for my students to use when they sit and work together, lay down to read during independent reading time or sit together when I do a whole class read aloud.
Something bright and colorful will cheer our classroom up and make it feel more like a cozy. I strive to make my classroom environment warm and inviting where all students feel comfortable and excited about learning each and every day.
